Course Description
June 21 & 28, 2021
The fundamentals of site remediation give you a framework to consider contaminant characteristics, the hydrogeosphere, remedial objectives and available technologies to identify the most suitable remediation approaches for a given site. Learners explore commonly available (and often completely free!) tools to become comfortable with available options. We use real-world examples to give a solid sense of practical decision making under conditions of uncertainty, critical issues in site remediation, and the pitfalls and traps that often separate success from failure.
Key learning objectives include:
- Gaining a general understanding of the overall physical and chemical characteristics of common contaminant groups, and how this influences remedy selection;
- Considering hydrogeologic and geologic issues (and data gaps!) in remediation, and how this influences remedy selection;
- Understanding the major groupings of remedial technologies, their relative advantages and disadvantages, and how to obtained detailed performance information and design procedures; · Applying the Conceptual Site Model, decision rules and screening matrices to identify potentially suitable remediation approaches for a given site;
- Gaining an awareness of containment, isolation and diversion strategies, especially in the context of monitored natural attenuation; and
- Becoming conversant with the most common forms of contracting and project delivery for remediation and understanding where to find more information on common contract.
