Course Description

A case study in which monitored natural attenuation (MNA) of petroleum hydrocarbons was assessed at a former tank farm site in Whitehorse, Yukon. The goal was to evaluate whether MNA could provide a viable strategy as part of the overall site restoration plan. The evaluation included a plume stability assessment and geochemical trend analysis to determine if the petroleum hydrocarbon plume was shrinking, stable or expanding, and if natural attenuation processes were sufficient to control the plume over many years. The results are quite surprising!
