GeoPro Talks - Upcycling Forestry Waste for Mine Water Treatment
Dr. Sue Satyro shows how her research led her to use commonly available forestry industry residues to treat mining-related contamination
In a real-life example of zero-waste and circular economy principles, Dr. Sue Satyro shows how her research led her to use commonly available forestry industry residues to treat mining-related contamination. In this presentation, Sue presents a specific cross-sector solution that addresses issues of both the pulp and mining industries. The ash from the pulping industry is used to produce a composite able to remove selenium from mining influenced waters: Pulp mills easily create a new product from what once was waste, while the environmental impact of the mining necessary to transition to an electrified economy is significantly reduced.
